Abstract: Turkish forests are diverse and rich in terms of forest composition and structure with 21.7 millon ha areas (27.6%). They include both managed and pristine natural mixed forests, dominated by softwood such as pine, fir, spruce and hardwood such as beech, oak, alder, walnut, hornbean. Turkey accommodates nearly three quarters of biodiversity across Europe. The country has several distinct biogeographic regions with specific forest types such as Caucasian mountain temperate forests and alpine ecosystems of the North East Black Sea Coast; steppe grasslands of the Central Anatolian plateau; and the European and the Mediterranean regions, which, respectively, include probably the largest remaining stands of pristine alluvial and Cyprus forests. In addition, one of the three major flyways for millions of migratory birds passes through Turkey. Forest resources of the country have been systematically planned and sustainably managed under government jurisdictions over approximately 51 years
